Brainteaser: How Can The Government Encourage Businesses To Hire?
President's 12/3 Job Forum To Tackle Job Creation Mystery
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following reaction to today's AP story on how President Obama's upcoming jobs forum will not be about creating jobs. Instead, the President intends to figure out how to encourage businesses to hire employees for jobs that presumably exist, but remain unfilled. Rep. Burton's statement is as follows:
"I'd like to call on President Obama to save America's taxpayers the cost of refreshments, service staff, or any other expenses associated with his jobs summit on December 3rd. In place of his pending public relations stunt, I'm willing to swing by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and share this answer to the jobs brainteaser that President Obama has been struggling with:
"Mr. President, to create jobs or encourage businesses to hire, first you must stop threatening America's economy with the high-spending, high-tax programs like cap-and-trade and government-run health care. Second, you must cut spending. Third, you must cut taxes on capital gains, small businesses and individuals.
"It's been a long road from January 20th until now, but I'm glad the President has decided to really hunker down and tackle the 'mystery' behind pro-growth policies for American businesses. And, even after months of policy failures, if the President still has pent-up hostility toward free market principles, I suggest he use that angst against a country other than ours - say, Iran, for example."

Congressman Burton Receives National Taxpayer Union's "Taxpayers' Friend" Award
In April of this year, Congressman Dan Burton was awarded the prestigious "Taxpayers' Friend" award from the non-partisan citizens group, the National Taxpayers Union. The award, which was given to only a handful of Congressmen and Senators, was for Burton's outstanding taxpayer friendly voting record in 2008.
“Given today’s economic climate, fiscal discipline is more important now than ever,” NTU President Duane Parde said. “Fortunately, taxpayers have a staunch ally in Congressman Burton, to whom National Taxpayers Union is proud to present a ‘Taxpayers’ Friend Award.’”
The award is given to Representatives and Senators who achieve an “A” grade in NTU’s annual Rating of Congress. The Rating, which is based on every roll call vote affecting fiscal policy, assigns a “Taxpayer Score” to each Member of Congress that indicates his or her support for reducing or controlling federal spending, taxes, debt, and regulation. For 2008, a total of 182 House and 104 Senate votes were selected.
“Congressman Burton pro-taxpayer score of 85 percent was one of the best in the entire Congress,” Parde said. “By voting time and again to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt, Dan Burton has led by example in the fight to defend overburdened taxpayers across the country.”
Between 2007 and 2008, the average “Taxpayer Score” in the House rose slightly from 35 percent to 36 percent. The Senate’s average dropped by five points, from 37 percent to 32 percent. In 2008, 48 lawmakers attained scores sufficient to win the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” (at least 80 percent in the House and 76 percent in the Senate). Meanwhile, a record 267 Senators and Representatives captured the title of “Big Spender” for posting “F” grades (scores of 25 percent or less in the House and 14 percent or less in the Senate).
Unlike those of other organizations, NTU’s annual Rating does not simplistically focus on only a handful of equally weighted “key votes.” For this reason, it has received praise from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including the late Sen. (and “Golden Fleece Award” creator) William Proxmire (D-WI).
“If every Member of Congress were as principled as Congressman Burton, current and future generations of Americans could enjoy much lower taxes and a less wasteful government,” Parde concluded. “Hard-working families in Indiana’s 5th District and across the nation owe Congressman Burton a debt of gratitude for his effort on their behalf. Congressman Burton has truly earned the title ‘Taxpayers’ Friend.’”
NTU is a nonpartisan, nonprofit citizen group founded in 1969 to work for lower taxes, smaller government, and economic freedom at all levels. Note: The 2008 Rating and a searchable Rating database from 1992 to 2008 is available at www.ntu.org. For questions about the Rating, its history, or methodology, please contact NTU Vice President for Policy and Communications Pete Sepp or NTU Communications Manager Natasha Altamirano at (703) 683-5700.

Burton to Obama: Somebody Messed With Joe
Indiana's Imaginary 00, 10th, 11th, 14th, and 18th Congressional Districts Make $5.3 Million Tax Dollar Windfall, Create Or Save Just 9 Imaginary Jobs
President Obama to Congress on 2/24/09, "That is why I have asked Vice President Biden to lead a tough, unprecedented oversight effort, because nobody messes with Joe."
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement after reviewing the page on the Obama Administration's Recovery.Gov website that breaks down Indiana's "Stimulus" funding by Congressional District:
"Back when President Obama first addressed the Congress after his inauguration, he said that Vice President Joe Biden would oversee the Stimulus spending because, 'Nobody messes with Joe.'
"Well, I think President Obama should know that somebody has messed with Joe. The imaginary 00, 10th, 11th, 14th, and 18th Congressional Districts of Indiana have, according to recovery.gov, made a tax dollar windfall of about $5.3 million, and 'created or saved' 9 jobs - all of which obviously can't exist in these fake districts.
"From the beginning, I said this program would be exposed to rampant waste, fraud, and abuse. Now, as we see these magical numbers from the Obama Administration, how can we ever be convinced that this money will be accounted for and given proper oversight? The answer is simply this: we can't.
"It's time to pack up this program, save the President from further embarrassments, use the remaining funds to pay down the debt and deficits, and cut taxes on capital gains, small businesses, and individuals so we can be 100% sure the money is used to create real jobs in real Congressional Districts.
"The unemployed Hoosiers in my Congressional District have never had the time for the Obama Administration's inability to stimulate long-term economic growth. It's time for results. It's time for the Administration to listen to Republican solutions for improving our economy and creating lasting jobs."
The following information is from Recovery.gov:
Indiana Congressional District Stimulus funding:
District 00 - $1,265,575 in funds, 0 jobs
District 10 - $1,219,765 in funds, 8 jobs
District 11 - $40,487 in funds, 0 jobs
District 14 - $217,914 in funds, 1 job
District 18 - $2,244,240 in funds, 0 jobs
